Skincare & Makeup Use

Skincare is not only functional

but also serves as a psychological need.

Products that cue protection, clean, care, and relaxation are winning the day in the pandemic.

CLE are seeking out products which not only soothe the irritation and dryness, but help to prevent it from happening again.

When asked to share a favorite beauty/skin/hair care product during the pandemic, most products are

  • moisturizers,
  • all-natural alternatives lacking harsh chemicals,
  • great smelling shampoos/conditioners/soaps,
  • gentle hand sanitizers.

“I’ve been using more nail and hand treatments due to the dryness from more thorough hand washings and hand sanitizers..”

Dove has always been a skin and hair care brand, but now thinking about this COVID-19 pandemic they have created their unique product thinking of us humanity and striving to keep them better which is the – “Dove Nourishing Hand Sanitizer”.  I truly admire them.”

“Everybody knows that during this pandemic the one product which can keep us safe is the Hand Sanitizer which we should use often throughout the day to protect us from the corona virus.

“ I have been using Bigelow brand peppermint and lavender shampoo for the last few months.  i first tried it while staying at a hotel and decided to buy a bottle since I loved the smell and clean results. Perhaps the smell is the best part. The lavender is very calming and the peppermint so good for the scalp.”

“I am using the same skin care products and just cleaning my face more often and practicing self care to keep my skin looking good. For my makeup, I use the same products, but have a simpler routine and many days don’t wear makeup because I don’t leave the house. I’m trying to wear more natural products that are better for my skin.”

“My favorite new product is my Hair Food Shampoo and Conditioner. These are new products that I found during the pandemic and i really love them. I bought them because they are made with only natural ingredients, are affordable and promised a lot of hydration to my hair. I honestly love them because it really helps my hair shine and feel clean and doesn’t weigh my hair down. I love that I can feel good about using them because they are made only with real, natural ingredients, and no chemicals. I think these work great in keeping my hair clean and healthy during this pandemic and I like supporting brands that are natural and sustainable.”

Masks vs. Makeup!

A decrease in social interactions and an increase in cleanliness has led to shifting personal care practices.

CLEs feel less need for upkeep of hair and makeup. Many are wearing less makeup, not shaving as often, and stopped styling their hair.

  • Less time seeing people, whether staying in more or keeping your distance.
  • The masks cover your face.
  • Masks, hand washing, and staying indoors have left people with drier and more irritated skin.
  • There are more important events happening that make personal care more trivial.

We asked CLE how the mask has affected their facial makeup usage.  Over ¼ are no longer wearing makeup since the mask covers their face.

Along with about 50% of people changing their makeup usage, masks can cause breakouts, skin irritations, and discomfort.

“I don’t wear much make up because I sweat too much with a mask.  Also , no lip products because masks ruin it”

“I think that face masks are affecting my skin, especially since I have sensitive skin.  I have had some problems with skin texture and a couple of breakouts on my chin area.  I make sure I use moisturizer and sunscreen so my face is moisturized and protected, and I treat skin problems as soon as I possibly can.”

“I am wearing less make-up since the masks and scarfs cover my lips and cheeks, some days I go without eye make-up too.   Also, for some reason my psoriasis has spread to new areas on my face

“I am using the same products as I did before the pandemic. I’m using more skincare then I was prior to the pandemic and less makeup. Because of the amount of time that I’ve had to spend at home, I’ve been really paying attention to my skincare, especially my face! The only product I’ve added to my routine is a serum by Sunday Riley that has salicylic acid and helps treat and prevent acne. Instead of doing my facial routine just in the morning, I now do it morning and night. I’ve definitely worn less makeup since the pandemic started.”

My cheeks and areas near my mouth, chin and neck suddenly are very flaky and very itchy.”

Sunscreen with Masks?

Of those that wear sunscreen, 81% were wearing it some place on their face.  Interesting, 45% of all surveyed noted that they did not wear sunscreen.
